The Upward Bound program has two major components:

Academic Year Component

Through weekly meetings at their high schools, three Saturday Seminars at the university, and additional workshops and presentations, Upward Bound participants receive the following services during the school year:

  • Academic, personal and career counseling
  • Tutoring Services
  • Opportunities to tour colleges and universities  in Utah and Nevada
  • Cultural and social enrichment activities
  • Fee waivers for college applications, ACT and other college entrance exams
  • Assistance with college selection, admissions and financial aid

Summer Component

Students who excel during the academic year component are invited to participate in a six-week summer component which includes the following services:

  • College-level courses in math, science, language, composition and computer literacy
  • The opportunity to experience college life while living on DSU’s campus
  • Academic advising, mentoring and tutoring
  • Educational, social and cultural enrichment activities
  • Community service projects
  • Work-Study
  • Leadership opportunities, including participation on yearbook, video, banquet and student advisory committees
