He was born in St. George, Utah and attended Dixie High School when it was the only high school in town. He earned an Associate Degree from Dixie State College before attending Southern Utah University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a psychology major and a mathematics minor. While teaching school in Salt Lake City, he attended the University of Utah and earned a Master of Education degree with a guidance counseling endorsement. He taught for three years at Valley Jr. High School in the Granite School District before finding employment with the Washington County School District at Hurricane High School. He was a guidance counselor, mathematics teacher, and coach there for 27 years. He also taught mathematics courses at Dixie State College as an adjunct instructor.
After 30 years of teaching, Larry retired and stayed that way for just over two weeks. He is grateful for the opportunity to be associated with the students and staff in the SSS program He is married to Nancy Hafen of Santa Clara, Utah and they have six children and at least three times that number of grandchildren.
Larry and Nancy recently returned from Zambia where they were involved in humanitarian service activities. Larry was granted a leave of absence from Dixie State College and has now returned to work with the TRiO Student Support Services program.
